Bombay: A 60-year-old man has died after a school bus rammed him in Govandi on Thursday.

Deonar Police said Jamil Ahmed Mohammed Hussain Chowdhary was a fish vendor at Bhaucha Dhakka (Mazgaon) fish market. He was returning home after completing his trade when the incident occurred.

Declared dead in hospital

“The school bus was coming from the side lane. As the road is narrow and congested, the bus driver could not pass and ended up crashing into Mr. Jamil’s motorbike and crushing his upper body,” an official said. He added that Mr. Jamil was popular in his locality and therefore everyone recognized him and immediately took him to the hospital. However, he was pronounced dead before his arrival and sent to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar for an autopsy,” the official added.

According to the preliminary report, the cause of death is a fractured skull and loss of blood. The driver – Samrao Waghmare, 38, helped transport Mr Jamil to hospital while police were alerted afterwards. Fortunately, the schoolchildren on Mr Waghmare’s bus were immediately rescued unharmed and transferred to another bus, which then took them home.

A case has been registered against Mr Waghmare under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act
