Tension in the Margao wholesale market as fish are sold at retail prices
Sellers threaten legal action if SGPDA does not act against retailers
MARGAO: Once again there was tension in the wholesale fish market in Margao, not because of the collection of sopo, but because of the sale of the fish at the retail price.
South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) retail market vendors have alleged that even the authority is not taking action against wholesale market retailers.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, a group of retail fish vendors from the retail market felt their presence at the wholesale market and protested the same.
Also, warned that they will take the law into their own hands if the SGPDA does not act against retailers doing business in the wholesale market. Even members of fish wholesalers in Margao supported the request.
It is to be recalled that the retail fish sellers at the SGPDA fish market had lodged their complaint against the retail activities at the wholesale fish market, but no action has been taken till date.
“This wholesale fish market is for wholesale only, not retail business. The SGPDA has a separate market for retail fish sellers. However, it has been noticed that several vendors are selling fish at retail price in the wholesale fish market which is hampering our business,” said one of the female fish vendors.
She further accused the SGPDA of failing to take action against the retail trade of fish in the wholesale market.
“We are really tired of demanding a stop to the retail sale of fish in the wholesale market, and now the time has come to take the law into our own hands. We give a final warning to the SGPDA. Stop immediately that the fish will be sold at retail price in the wholesale market or we will act,” warned another retail fish seller.
One of the wholesale fish traders also objected to the fish being sold at retail price in the wholesale market.
“Several complaints have been filed with the SGPDA to request the cessation of fish retail activities at the wholesale auction. Now we have decided not to pay the sopo to the SGPDA until the act,” he warned.
He further alleged that the representatives of the SGPDA allow the sellers to trade in the fish at the retail price.
However, later, one of the representatives present at the site assured to take action against all fish sellers involved in selling fish at retail price in the wholesale fish market.
