MARGAO: It may take another three months to move the wholesale fish market run by the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) to another location for the GSIDC to complete the revamping of the market area.

A temporary location has already been finalized, but other procedures need to be completed apart from constructing and implementing all necessary facilities at the temporary site, said Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar, Chairman of SGPDA. He told the Herald that after a joint inspection, the SGPDA examined the unused hockey pitch near the Fatorda indoor stadium, and this was seen as a major breakthrough in finding an alternative site to temporarily relocate the market. wholesale fish.

“We have started the process with the relevant authorities such as the GSIDC and the Department of Fisheries. On the other hand, it is necessary to spend money to provide all the necessary facilities at the alternative site,” Salkar said.

He is of the opinion that the area finalized to move the market is sufficient to accommodate the facilities of the temporary wholesale fish market and also provides parking space.

The SGPDA and other concerned authorities also insist on permissions from the District Collector, in addition to using chemicals to remove any foul odors that may emanate from the temporary market. It is relevant to note that the GSIDC had asked the SGPDA to transfer the entire surface area of the current fish market to it, so that the ongoing construction work on the market can be completed as soon as possible.
